6.2 magnitude earthquake in Papua, Indonesia

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has hit Indonesia’s Papua region, but there is no possibility of a tsunami, the country’s Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.

Citing the report of BMKG, the news agency Reuters reported that the earthquake originated at a depth of 16 km below the surface, about 262 km east-northeast of Papua’s Biak Island on Saturday.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Earlier on Saturday, three more earthquakes of magnitude 6.1, 5.9 and 5.5 occurred near the same area.

Just 11 days ago on August 29, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Two other earthquakes were also felt here earlier.
Indonesia, a country of about 270 million people, consists of thousands of islands scattered over the so-called ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’. Several separate tectonic plates of the crust have come together in this region and hence events such as earthquakes and eruptions occur frequently.
